PRACTICAL CLASSROOM AND DIRECT TEACHING STRATEGIES

Teaching the Subject Matter to Students who are Struggling with Reading, Writing, and Spelling -  This practical, individualized workshop helps teachers modify textbooks, materials and curriculum presentations without watering down curriculum content. Teachers will gain skills to meet the needs of ALL students, especially the hard to reach and teach, and the "fall through the cracks children". Teachers bring their classroom texts. Appropriate for grades 3-12.

Testing to Prevent Reading Failure - Too many students are not learning to read despite adequate teaching. This workshop focuses on tried and true criterion referenced strategies that measure decoding, spelling and phonemic awareness. Teachers will be taught error analysis and preventive strategies that can be used in the regular classroom. Appropriate for grades 2-12.

Successful Management Strategies for the ADHD Student in the Regular Classroom - The student is in your class, with or without a diagnosis; how are you going to manage both his learning and his behavior? Staff members will learn about ADD and ADHD, attention, reasons for inattention, Section 504 education plans, as well as reasonable medical and educational options that are available. Specific, practical classroom strategies will be learned and practiced. Appropriate for grades 4-12. Paraprofessionals are welcome.

Getting the Most out of Written Expression and Spelling in the Regular Classroom - This workshop will demonstrate an early intervention strategy that individualizes and personalizes instruction in written expression. For some teachers and students, spelling and spelling tests sometimes seem to be a hopeless task. Any student can be taught to spell given alternative, but necessary, tools. Six spelling approaches are taught to the teachers. Teachers bring their students' spelling books or lists. Appropriate for grades 2-12. Paraprofessionals are welcome.

Teaching Reading Skills Through the Subject Matter - Most secondary teachers do not have a reading background, yet their students are in need of reading skills. This workshop focuses on teaching the teachers the reading skills necessary so that these skills can be included in the way the curriculum is presented. Appropriate for grades 4-12. Paraprofessionals are welcome.

Introduction to Upper Level or Intermediate Level Multi-sensory Synthetic Phonics for Students who Have Not Learned by Traditional Methods - Once the curriculum has taken a direct shift to "reading in order to learn", there are still ways to remediate reading, written expression and spelling problems while keeping current with the demands of the curriculum. Participants will be introduced to the essential prefixes, roots, suffixes and the necessary syllable patterns so that students continue to grow in their written and oral language skills as well as in reading group text or Big Books. Appropriate for grades 4-12. Paraprofessionals are welcome.

Introduction to Basic Multi-sensory Synthetic Phonics for Struggling Students - Not all students need to know phonics. However, when a student does, an educationally sound approach should be used. Unfortunately, many teachers inadvertently teach bad phonic habits that can hamper learning. Participants will be introduced to synthetic, multi-sensory phonics as well as the logic and structure of the English language. Teachers bring their low reading group texts or Big Book. Participants will also be taught the four stages of the Fernald Approach for students who have not learned traditionally, and phonetically.

Multi-sensory Strategies Across the Curriculum in Reading, Spelling, Arithmetic, Vocabulary and Thinking - This workshop is designed for teachers and paraprofessionals who are experiencing difficulty in teaching struggling students who are not learning by traditional methods. Specific skills can be taught by using VAT-K (Visual, Auditory, Tactile-Kinesthetic) strategies. This is a hands on workshop. Participants will be able to apply strategies the next day. Teachers and Paraprofessionals will need to bring the text that is most difficult for your students. Appropriate for grades K-6.

Making Necessary Accommodations in the Subject Matter Classroom for the Students with IEP's and 504 Education Plans - Special needs students are needing more and more accommodations in the regular classroom. This hands on workshop will teach Teachers and Paraprofessionals how to automatically build into the daily delivery of the curriculum almost all of the basic accommodations necessary, and will address the issues of "fair testing". Teachers and Paraprofessionals will need to bring the text that is most difficult for your students. Appropriate for grades 3-12.
