IDENTIFYING STUDENTS WHO HAVE DYSLEXIC CHARACTERISTICS In the child with dyslexia the ability to perceive, retain and recall language symbols is distorted despite average to above average intelligence. The language system does not function properly and the student can not "show" what he/she has learned. Visual symbols and auditory sounds fail to stay in their correct relationship to each other, so that words are not easily and accurately recognized or recalled in speaking, reading, written expression, and spelling.
